How the color season quiz works

The quiz asks 14 questions about your natural coloring. Each answer moves you along three traits, and your season is the one whose typical position is closest to yours. Nothing is guessed from a photo. Here is every question, every weight and the arithmetic.

The method

  1. Three traits. Temperature (cool to warm), depth (light to deep) and clarity (soft to clear), each on a scale from -1 to +1.
  2. Each answer pushes. The tables below show how far each answer moves you on each trait, from -2 to +2, times the question's weight. Questions that are easy to check in daylight (eyes, metals, contrast, bright colors, the paper test) weigh 1.2; the sun, flush and lip questions weigh 0.8.
  3. Your position. For each trait we add up your pushes and divide by the most the quiz could push in that direction. Because few people answer every question one way, the result is stretched (temperature by 1.25, depth by 1.2, clarity by 1.05) and capped at the ends of the scale.
  4. Closest season. Each season has a typical position, for example Soft Autumn is very soft, fairly warm and medium in depth. We measure the distance from you to each season, counting the season's leading trait fully, its second trait at 0.7 and the third at 0.3. The match score is 100 at zero distance and falls off smoothly (a distance of 0.55 leaves about 61).
  5. Confidence. How far ahead the winner is of all the other seasons, on a 0 to 100 scale. Every "Not sure" answer lowers it (a quiz answered entirely "Not sure" would keep at most 40%). If the runner-up's match is within 10 points, the result shows both seasons and a drape test to settle it.

Limits

This is a questionnaire, not an in-person draping. It relies on how you see your own coloring, and people disagree about typing, including professionals. If your confidence is low, test the two suggested colors at a window. We will re-check the weights against real results after launch and publish any change here.
